I welcome K.N.Ife to the Cultation Q&A session to discuss the artist’s past/present/future. In the past we’ve shared photos from her Instagram that can be viewed here, here, and yes, even here.

K.N.Ife - Q&A with K.N.Ife - me– What is your full name and origin?

My name is Kephera Ife I was born on the island of Jamaica.  I grew up mostly here in New York City.

– What does your name mean?

My full name Kephera Nuru Ife means Creative Light – Lover of art and culture. It’s a mix of Kemetic (kephera who also happens to be the name of the scarab beetle that literally create itself and  the Kemetic god of creation) and Swahili.

K.N.Ife - Q&A with K.N.Ife - Colt45– How would you describe your style? What mediums do you work with?

I do all kinds of art.  Painting, sculpture, drawing, fashion illustration etc.  The style I’m focusing on most at the moment is Photo realism while trying to work my way up to Hyper Realism.  I’m using mostly graphite, colored pencil and markers to achieve that.

– At what age did you want to pursue art? How did you get to become the artist you are now?

I think it was at a very early age.  Though I found out I had something going with art with the encouragement of my High School art teacher.  Very cliché I know, but she opened my eyes and made me love the process.  In college however I chose a different form of art, my medium being fabric and I got my degree in fashion design.

– Who/what were your influences in art?

I have artists I admire a great deal.  I like Dali, Seurat, Keith Haring, Warhol, Pollack  and a few others.  Their use of color more than their style has most influenced me.

– Is there a message you want to get across with your work?

There is no particular message really. just giving and sharing my talent is enough.  My work tells its own story whatever the subject matter.

I get creative blocks all the time. Sometimes its good to take a break usually inspiration hits from anything it could be a spark from a conversation or a flash of an image in my mind or just looking at others artistic expression.

K.N.Ife - Q&A with K.N.Ife - Spaced– Do you ever get a creative block? If so, How do you get over it?

I get creative blocks all the time. Sometimes its good to take a break usually inspiration hits from anything it could be a spark from a conversation or a flash of an image in my mind or just looking at others artistic expression.

– What short and long-term goals do you have?

My long-term goal is to become a skilled Hyper Realist.  Capturing my subject exactly as I see it.  Short term would be a gallery show.

– What would you consider success when it comes to art?

Success in art is achieving a level or a style that can become recognizable.  It’s not necessarily monetary for me although the money would be great.  I do art because it makes me feel like a whole person.  Because it’s a part of me I let the world in on without having to use words.

– Last, but not least is a question we ask all artists, which I receive all completely different answers to… How would you define creativity?

Creativity to me is looking at anything and being able to create and reimagined what it could be.  To be able to see the beauty in a thing that most don’t see.
